Gas Prices in New York City Today

New York City is supplied through New York Harbor. New York State has no refineries; the nearest is Phillips 66’s refinery across the harbor in Linden, New Jersey, at 275,000 barrels a day in EIA’s January 2026 survey. Gasoline also reaches the harbor on the Colonial Pipeline, which runs from Houston, and by tanker and barge. All five boroughs are in the EPA’s New York–Northern New Jersey–Long Island–Connecticut reformulated-gasoline area.

New York State taxes gasoline in several parts: an 8¢ excise, a petroleum business tax of 15.8¢ a gallon in 2026 (it is indexed each January), and a state and transit-district sales tax collected at 8.75¢ a gallon. New York City adds its own 4.5% local sales tax, applied as a percentage of the price.

Since June 2000, the city has averaged 2¢ above the U.S. price and 9¢ below the New York State average, and it has been below the statewide figure in 95% of weeks. The largest weekly increase in the series came after Hurricane Katrina: in the week of September 5, 2005, the price rose 67¢ to $3.28. In the week of September 4, 2017, after Hurricane Harvey curtailed Colonial Pipeline shipments from Houston, it rose 38¢ to $2.79. The series high is $4.98, in the week of June 13, 2022.

The series opens on June 5, 2000, at $1.61 for regular. The lowest weekly price through 2025 came shortly after, in the week of December 31, 2001, at $1.13. The yearly average for 2001 was $1.50, and 2002 produced the lowest yearly average, $1.41.

The highest weekly price was $4.98, in the week of June 13, 2022. That year also holds the highest yearly average, $3.94. Before it, the yearly average reached $3.27 in 2008 and then stood at $2.37 in 2009. It climbed through $3.61 in 2011 and $3.72 in 2012, then eased to $3.59 in 2013 and $3.44 in 2014.

The largest fall in a yearly average came in 2015, when the figure fell 30.4% from the year before, to $2.40. The largest rise came in 2021, when the average rose 37.9% to $3.01, after $2.18 in 2020. Since the 2022 peak the yearly averages have been $3.45 in 2023, $3.21 in 2024 and $2.98 in 2025.

Within 2025, the gap between the highest and lowest weeks was 30.6¢. The highest week was $3.11, in the week of September 8, 2025, and the lowest was $2.81, in the week of December 29, 2025.
