Gas Prices in New York Today

In the EIA’s July 2026 (revised August 2026) table of motor fuel taxes, New York’s state taxes and fees on gasoline total 24.2¢ a gallon, the 13th-lowest of the 50 states and D.C. The 51-jurisdiction average is 33.8¢, and the federal tax adds 18.4¢ everywhere. That ranking understates what New York drivers pay. The state excise tax is 8¢, one of the lowest in the country, and most of the state figure is the petroleum business tax. State and local sales taxes are charged on top, several counties levy theirs in cents per gallon, and the EIA table excludes them.

New York has no refineries. Its supply comes through New York Harbor, the main gasoline trading and storage hub for the Northeast. The Colonial Pipeline from the Gulf Coast ends at Linden, New Jersey, on the harbor, and tankers bring gasoline from other U.S. regions and from abroad. The daily wholesale price shown on this site’s homepage is the New York Harbor spot price, so it is the wholesale benchmark closest to New York’s own supply.

Fuel rules vary within the state. The New York City metro area requires federal reformulated gasoline, while most of upstate New York uses conventional gasoline. The EIA publishes both series for New York; the headline price on this page is the blend of the two.

New York’s seasonal pattern is moderate. Averaged over 2004–2025, January is 7.0% below the year’s average and June 5.1% above. Over the full weekly series, New York has been above the national average in about 88 percent of weeks, by 11.2¢ on average, but that premium has narrowed over time, as the history page shows.

In 2024, 0 of 5 bordering states averaged less than New York, whose all-grades average was $3.17. New York averaged 3.6¢ below New Jersey ($3.20) and 16.1¢ below Massachusetts ($3.33) in 2024. It averaged 19.6¢ below Vermont ($3.36), 20.0¢ below Connecticut ($3.37) and 23.0¢ below Pennsylvania ($3.40) in 2024.

In 1970 the average was $0.37 and the rank was 32nd-cheapest. The ranks from 1970 to 2024 run from 7th-cheapest in 1984 and 1985 to 49th-cheapest (3rd-most-expensive) in 1973 and 1974. The 48th-cheapest rank came with $1.28 in 1980, and the 8th-cheapest came with $1.10 in 1990. The 2000 average of $1.52 placed 29th-cheapest, the 2010 average of $2.77 placed 32nd-cheapest, and the 2020 average of $2.15 placed 28th-cheapest.

New York's average stood 10.6¢ above the U.S. average in 2014, the largest amount above in any year from 1970 to 2024. The 11.8¢ gap below in 2024 is the largest amount below in that span. New York was below the U.S. figure in 15 of those 55 years.

The weekly record of $4.94 was set in the week of June 13, 2022, the same year as the annual peak of $3.79 at the pump. In constant 2025 dollars, the annual peak was $5.11 in 2012, and the 2024 figure was $3.25. The lowest in those dollars was $2.10 in 1998.
