Gas Prices in Boston Today

New England has no operating oil refineries, so gasoline sold in the Boston area arrives by water. Domestic cargoes come mainly from the New York Harbor area and from refineries around Philadelphia; imports, which EIA found made up just over half of the region’s marine receipts in 2013, come largely from Canada. The Port of Boston is the region’s largest fuel port, with terminals along the Chelsea and Mystic Rivers and the Weymouth Fore River, where gasoline is unloaded from ships and loaded onto trucks for delivery to stations. The EPA lists Massachusetts as a statewide reformulated-gasoline area, so every station in the metro sells federal reformulated gasoline all year, and EIA’s Boston series is made up entirely of reformulated gasoline.

Massachusetts taxes gasoline at 24¢ a gallon, the rate in effect since July 31, 2013, and the federal tax of 18.4¢ applies on top of it.

EIA’s weekly Boston series begins in May 2003. Over that span the metro has averaged 2¢ below the U.S. price and within half a cent of the Massachusetts average, and it has been above the national figure in about 35% of weeks. Because the region depends on waterborne supply, shipping disruptions reach it quickly. In the week after Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast at the end of August 2005, the Boston price rose 60¢, from $2.61 to $3.21 in the week of September 5, 2005, while the U.S. average rose 46¢. The highest weekly price in the series is $5.06, in the week of June 13, 2022.

The lowest weekly regular price in the Boston series, $1.49, was recorded in the week of June 9, 2003, after the series opened at $1.51. Among calendar years, 2004 holds the lowest yearly average at $1.86. Boston averaged $2.26 in 2005, $2.56 in 2006 and $2.71 in 2007. The 2008 average reached $3.17, and 2009 brought $2.31.

Boston averaged $3.53 in 2011 and $3.64 in 2012, then $3.53 in 2013 and $3.39 in 2014. The 2015 figure of $2.36 followed a fall of 30.4%, the largest fall in the yearly average from the year before. The average for 2016 was $2.11, and 2017 closed at $2.40. The years 2018 and 2019 came in at $2.73 and $2.59.

In 2020 the average stood at $2.14, and 2021 came in at $2.92. The 2022 average of $4.01 is the highest yearly average, reached after a rise of 37.3%, the largest rise in the yearly average from the year before. Later years came in at $3.47 for 2023, $3.25 for 2024 and $2.98 for 2025.

The 2025 average is the mean of that year's weekly prices. Those weeks ranged from $2.87 in the week of April 14, 2025 to $3.12 in the week of September 8, 2025, a spread of 25.9¢.
