Gas Prices in Denver Today

Colorado has one refinery, Suncor’s plant in Commerce City just north of Denver, with crude capacity of 103,000 barrels a day in EIA’s January 2026 survey. The rest of the metro’s gasoline arrives by pipeline from the Midwest and the Gulf Coast. Fuel specifications changed recently: after the EPA reclassified the Denver–North Front Range ozone area as a severe nonattainment area, conventional gasoline could no longer be sold in its nine counties (Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas, Jefferson, Larimer and Weld) from November 7, 2023. EIA’s Denver series switched from conventional to reformulated gasoline the following week.

Colorado’s gasoline tax has been 22¢ a gallon since 1991. Since April 1, 2023, gasoline has also carried a state road usage fee, which phases up on a schedule set in law.

Since June 2000, Denver has averaged 9¢ below the U.S. price and 2¢ below the Colorado average. Its dependence on a single local refinery shows in the series. Suncor shut the Commerce City plant on December 24, 2022, after cold-weather damage. In the week of December 26, the Denver price was $2.62, 47¢ below the U.S. average; by the week of February 20, 2023, it was $4.12, 74¢ above. In May 2026 a power outage caused another unplanned shutdown at the refinery, and in the week of May 18, 2026, Denver was at $4.64, 15¢ above the U.S. average. The series high is $4.84, in the week of June 13, 2022.

The lowest weekly regular price in the Denver series was $1.02, in the week of December 17, 2001. The highest was $4.84, in the week of June 13, 2022. The series began on June 5, 2000, at $1.49.

The lowest yearly average was $1.34 in 2002, and the highest was $3.71 in 2022. Averages moved from $1.80 in 2004 to $2.24 in 2005 and $3.15 in 2008, then to $2.23 in 2009. The average was $3.48 in 2012, $3.41 in 2013 and $3.32 in 2014. In 2015 it was $2.32, after a fall of 30.2% from the year before, the largest fall in the yearly average. The 2016 average was $2.02.

The yearly average was $2.18 in 2020 and $3.12 in 2021, a rise of 42.9%, the largest rise in the yearly average. Later averages were $3.49 in 2023, $3.01 in 2024 and $2.85 in 2025.

Within 2025, the highest week was the week of September 8, 2025, at $3.22, and the lowest was the week of December 29, 2025, at $2.17. The difference between the highest and lowest weekly prices of 2025 was $1.05.
