U.S. Gas Price Data

6 free CSV datasets covering 7,146 rows of U.S. gasoline and diesel prices and fuel taxes — national averages back to 1970, every week since 2000, all 50 states and D.C. Every figure is official U.S. Energy Information Administration data; what we add is the organising, the inflation adjustment, and the documentation.

Compiled from U.S. EIA data; free to use with attribution to usgasgauge.com. Each file is generated from our database at the moment you download it, so it always matches what the site shows — it is not a build-time snapshot. Underlying prices refresh weekly, when EIA publishes.

yearCalendar year.
price_nominal_usd_per_galAnnual average price in that year's dollars.
price_real_usd_per_galSame price in constant dollars. Inflation-adjusted to constant dollars using the CPI-U (BLS, via FRED series CPIAUCSL).
source_basisSEDS (pre-2000) or GND (2000 onward) — EIA's basis change.

Source U.S. EIA. 1970–1999 from the State Energy Data System (SEDS) national series; 2000–present from the weekly/monthly retail (GND) series averaged to years.

Before you use it: EIA changed its retail price basis in 2000. The source_basis column marks which side of that break each row comes from — do not treat the series as a single uninterrupted survey.

Weekly U.S. national gas prices, 2000–present

Every weekly U.S. average retail price of regular gasoline EIA has published since 2000, nominal and inflation-adjusted.

Source U.S. EIA State Energy Data System (SEDS), motor gasoline, converted from $/MMBtu to $/gallon using EIA's finished-motor-gasoline heat content.

Before you use it: SEDS is an annual series and lags the current year — it is the only basis EIA publishes for all 51 jurisdictions, which is why it is used here rather than the weekly survey (which covers 9 states).

price_basis'eia_published' = EIA's own published weekly value. 'usgasgauge_estimate' = our regional estimate, NOT an EIA figure — cite it to usgasgauge.com, not to EIA.
rank_cheapest1 = cheapest of the 51 jurisdictions.
week_endingSurvey week the value refers to, ISO date.

Source U.S. EIA. Nine states with a weekly EIA retail series carry their own published value; the remaining 42 carry an estimate derived from their EIA PADD region's weekly move applied to the state's latest published SEDS annual average.

Before you use it: The price_basis column distinguishes the two: 'eia_published' rows are EIA's own values, 'usgasgauge_estimate' rows are ours and are not an EIA publication. Do not cite the estimates as EIA figures.

Diesel price history, weekly 2000–present

Weekly on-highway diesel prices for the U.S. average and California, the two diesel series EIA publishes that this site tracks.

local_option_taxestrue where local option taxes may apply on top (EIA footnote 4).
editionEIA edition the rates come from.
as_ofFirst day of that edition's month, ISO date.

Source U.S. EIA, “Federal and state motor fuels taxes”, reissued each January and July. The edition column records which edition each row came from.

Before you use it: EIA lists taxes of general application and excludes county and local taxes. The local_option_taxes column flags states where local taxes may be charged on top, so a total here is state + federal only.

Using this data

Attribution

Compiled from U.S. EIA data; free to use with attribution to usgasgauge.com. The underlying figures are U.S. government data and are not copyrightable; the compilation, inflation adjustment and documentation are ours, offered under CC BY 4.0. A link back to usgasgauge.com is all we ask.

Two things to check first

EIA changed its retail price basis in 2000, so the long national series is a stitch of two surveys — the source_basis column marks the break. And the current-by-state file mixes published EIA values with our regional estimates for the 42 states EIA does not survey weekly; the price_basis column marks every row as eia_published or usgasgauge_estimate, so a file taken out of context still says which is which.
