What sets Nebraska gas prices

In the EIA’s July 2026 (revised August 2026) table of motor fuel taxes, Nebraska’s state taxes and fees on gasoline total 32.7¢ a gallon, tied for the 22nd-highest of the 50 states and D.C. The 51-jurisdiction average is 33.8¢, and the federal tax adds 18.4¢ everywhere. Nebraska’s tax is not a single fixed rate. It combines a fixed portion, a variable portion set for road funding, and a wholesale portion equal to 5 percent of the average wholesale cost of fuel over the previous six months. The state resets the total on January 1 and July 1; for the first half of 2026 it was 31.8¢, unchanged from the previous six months. A small petroleum release remedial action fee is added.

Nebraska has no petroleum refineries, according to the EIA, so its gasoline arrives by pipeline and truck from refineries in other states. The state is a major producer of fuel ethanol, which is blended into gasoline at terminals. It has no federal reformulated-gasoline areas.

Nebraska has no weekly EIA series. The Midwest region’s weekly prices over 2004–2025 averaged 9.8% below their annual mean in January and 7.5% above in June.

For much of the record Nebraska was among the higher-priced states: it ranked 46th-cheapest of the 51 in 1970, 48th in 1976, and 46th in 1981, and its annual average was up to 8.3¢ above the U.S. average in the 1980s and 1990s. From 2000 through 2014 it ranged from 7.4¢ below to 8.1¢ above the national average; from 2015 through 2024 it ranged from 4.8¢ to 10.1¢ below, ranking between 22nd and 26th. Its cheapest ranking was 7th, in 2008. The highest annual average is $3.83, in 2022. Adjusted for inflation, the highest was 1981, at $5.04 in 2025 dollars.
