Wyoming Gas Prices This Week

In the EIA’s July 2026 (revised August 2026) table of motor fuel taxes, Wyoming’s state taxes and fees on gasoline total 24.0¢ a gallon, the 12th-lowest of the 50 states and D.C. The 51-jurisdiction average is 33.8¢, and the federal tax adds 18.4¢ everywhere. That is a 23¢ excise tax plus a 1¢ license tax, a total of 24¢ since the legislature raised it by 10¢ in 2013. It is not indexed.

Wyoming has four refineries, according to the EIA: in Sinclair, Evansville (near Casper), Evanston, and Newcastle, with about 127,000 barrels a day of combined capacity. For a state of its population that is a large amount of refining, and gasoline moves out of Wyoming by pipeline to Colorado and other neighbors. Regular gasoline is sold at 85 octane, as elsewhere in the Rocky Mountain region.

Wyoming has usually been at or below the national average. It ranked among the five cheapest states in 1987, 1988, 1990, and 1991, and its gap to the U.S. figure averaged 4.3¢ below in the 1990s. In 2011 and 2012 it ranked 3rd-cheapest both years, 16.6¢ below and 18.3¢ below the U.S. average. The main exception was the late 1970s and early 1980s: Wyoming ranked 50th in 1979 and 49th in 1980.

That period also holds Wyoming’s inflation-adjusted record. Its highest annual average in 2025 dollars is 1981 (1980 was within a cent), at $5.03. For 35 of the other 50 jurisdictions, the inflation-adjusted peak came in 2011 or 2012. Its highest nominal average is $3.88, in 2022. Wyoming’s 30.4% decline in 2009 is the largest one-year drop in its record. Since 2011 the EIA has estimated Wyoming’s price from the Rocky Mountain regional trend applied to its 2010 level, so its later changes match those of Idaho, Montana, and Utah.

The region’s weekly price has a deep winter low, about 13% below its annual average in January, and a summer high that lasts from June through September.

Wyoming's cheapest ranking in any year from 1970 to 2024 was 3rd-cheapest in 2011 and 2012. Its least favourable was 50th-cheapest (2nd-most-expensive) in 1979. In 1970 it stood 36th-cheapest, tied, at $0.37, and in 1980 it stood 49th-cheapest at $1.29.

The 1990 average of $1.08 ranked 4th-cheapest. In 2000 the figure was $1.47, ranked 21st-cheapest, and in 2010 it was $2.67, ranked 18th-cheapest. The 2020 average of $2.22 placed Wyoming 35th-cheapest, tied.

Against the U.S. average, the largest amount below was 18.3¢ in 2012, and the largest amount above was 13.0¢ in 2021. Across 1970 to 2024, Wyoming averaged below the U.S. figure in 33 of 55 years and above it in 21 of 55.

The 2021 average also carries Wyoming's largest one-year rise, 39.9%. The 2022 average of $3.88 is its highest at the pump. In constant 2025 dollars its lowest average was $2.02 in 1998, against a high of $5.03 in 1981.

In 2024 Wyoming averaged $3.12, which is 16.7¢ below the U.S. figure of $3.29. That year it ranked 17th-cheapest, or 35th-most-expensive. The 2024 average equals $3.20 in 2025 dollars. From 2014 to 2024 the pump price fell 2.9%, while the constant-dollar figure fell 26.8%.
