Kansas Gas Prices This Week

In the EIA’s July 2026 (revised August 2026) table of motor fuel taxes, Kansas’s state taxes and fees on gasoline total 25.0¢ a gallon, the 17th-lowest of the 50 states and D.C. The 51-jurisdiction average is 33.8¢, and the federal tax adds 18.4¢ everywhere. The Kansas excise tax has been 24¢ a gallon since 2003. The only other state charges in the EIA figure are a 1¢ environmental assurance fee, reinstated on January 1, 2020, and an inspection fee of a small fraction of a cent.

Kansas has three refineries with a combined capacity of 413,000 barrels a day, according to the EIA: HF Sinclair at El Dorado (162,000), CVR at Coffeyville (132,000), and CHS at McPherson (119,000). Kansas has no federal reformulated-gasoline areas. Johnson and Wyandotte counties, the Kansas side of the Kansas City area, had a 7.0 psi summer volatility limit until the EPA ended it effective April 12, 2021, along with the matching rule on the Missouri side.

Kansas has no weekly EIA price series. In the Midwest region’s weekly data for 2004–2025, prices averaged 9.8% below their annual mean in January and 7.5% above it in June.

In the EIA’s annual state series, Kansas had the lowest average price of the 51 in 1970, 1971, 1972, and 1981, and the second-lowest in 1980 and 1988. It was among the five cheapest states in 8 years, most recently 1998. Its highest-priced ranking was 37th-cheapest, in 1984. Since 2015 it has ranked between 12th and 16th, from 12.0¢ to 19.8¢ below the U.S. average, compared with 9.8¢ below to 0.4¢ above in 2000–2014. The highest annual average is $3.71, in 2022. Adjusted for inflation, the highest was 2012 (2011 was within a cent), at $4.84 in 2025 dollars, and the lowest 1998, at $0.97 ($1.93 in 2025 dollars).

In 2024 Kansas averaged $3.10 while the U.S. averaged $3.29, putting Kansas 18.5¢ below the national figure. That price was 15th-cheapest and 37th-most-expensive among the 50 states and D.C. In constant 2025 dollars the 2024 Kansas average was $3.18. Colorado averaged $3.13 in 2024, and Kansas was 3.3¢ below it.

Among the bordering states, 2 of 4 averaged less than Kansas in 2024. Missouri was at $3.03 and Oklahoma at $3.04, so Kansas was 7.1¢ above Missouri and 6.4¢ above Oklahoma. Nebraska, at $3.21, had the highest 2024 average of the bordering states, and Kansas was 10.7¢ below it.

From 1970 to 2024, Kansas averaged below the U.S. average in 51 of 55 years and above it in 3 of 55: 1984, 1985 and 2002. In 1985 it was 3.4¢ above the U.S., the largest amount above in any year of that span.

The 1980 average of $1.16 was 2nd-cheapest, and the 1990 average of $1.11 was 11th-cheapest. Kansas was 10th-cheapest in 2000 at $1.42, and 14th-cheapest in 2020 at $1.99. The 1970 average was $0.33.

The 2015 average fell 28.3% from 2014, the largest one-year fall, and the 2021 average rose 41.2% from 2020, the largest one-year rise. Because Kansas has no weekly EIA survey, the EIA estimates each year after 2010 from the change in the state's region, which covers both 2015 and 2021.
