Hawaii Gas Prices This Week

In the EIA’s July 2026 (revised August 2026) table of motor fuel taxes, Hawaii’s state taxes and fees on gasoline total 18.5¢ a gallon, the 2nd-lowest of the 50 states and D.C. The 51-jurisdiction average is 33.8¢, and the federal tax adds 18.4¢ everywhere. That state figure is only part of the tax. Each county adds its own per-gallon tax, which the EIA lists at 16.5¢ in Honolulu, 17¢ on Kauai, 23¢ on the island of Hawaii, and 24¢ on Maui. The state also levies a 2.5¢ environmental response, energy, and food security tax.

Hawaii has one refinery, Par Hawaii’s plant at Kapolei on Oahu, with about 93,500 barrels a day of capacity according to the EIA. Crude oil and additional fuel must be shipped in, and gasoline for the neighbor islands moves again by barge from Oahu.

In the EIA’s annual state series, Hawaii was the most expensive of the 50 states and D.C. in every year from 1970 through 1999, and first or second most expensive in every year since. Its premium over the U.S. average grew by decade: 8.0¢ in the 1970s, 26.9¢ in the 1980s, 34.1¢ in the 2000s, and $1.38 from 2020 through 2024. The annual figures exclude the county taxes, so the average price Hawaii drivers pay is higher than the series shows.

Since 2011 the EIA has estimated Hawaii’s annual price by applying the West Coast regional trend (excluding California) to its 2010 level, and Alaska’s the same way. Because the two states’ 2010 averages were equal, their figures have matched since. The record annual average is $5.55, in 2022; adjusted for inflation, the high was 2012 ($6.12 in 2025 dollars). The largest one-year rise was 1980, 38.8%, and the largest drop 2009, 22.5%.

The EIA publishes no weekly Hawaii price. Its regional series peaks in June and bottoms out in January, but it reflects mainland markets and says little about seasonal demand in Hawaii.

No year from 1970 to 2024 put Hawaii below the U.S. average: the tally was 55 of 55 years above and 0 of 55 below. Hawaii averaged $1.65 above the U.S. in 2022, the largest such amount in any year, and $1.44 above in 2024. That 2024 gap compares $4.73 for Hawaii with $3.29 for the U.S.

Counted from the cheapest, Hawaii stood 51st-cheapest, which is the most expensive place, in 1970, 1980, 1990, 2020 and 2024. Its cheapest placing was 50th-cheapest, held in 2000, 2002, 2008–2010 and 2016. In 2000 that placing came at $1.67, and the 2010 average of $3.38 shared it as a tie.

Hawaii's nominal averages were $0.42 in 1970, $1.35 in 1980, $1.46 in 1990 and $3.19 in 2020. In constant 2025 dollars the lowest annual average was $2.72 in 1999, while 2024 came to $4.85. Every year after 2010 in this series is an EIA estimate built from the change in the region, so the 2014 to 2024 rise of 16.4% at the pump and fall of 12.1% in constant dollars are the region's moves.

On taxes, the July 2026 EIA table lists Hawaii's state taxes and fees at 18.5¢ a gallon, which is 15.3¢ below the 33.8¢ average across the 50 states and D.C.
