Utah Gas Prices This Week

In the EIA’s July 2026 (revised August 2026) table of motor fuel taxes, Utah’s state taxes and fees on gasoline total 38.6¢ a gallon, the 14th-highest of the 50 states and D.C. The 51-jurisdiction average is 33.8¢, and the federal tax adds 18.4¢ everywhere. Utah’s rate is not fixed in cents. A 2015 law replaced the 24.5¢ tax with one equal to 12 percent of the statewide average wholesale (rack) price, starting January 1, 2016, subject to a minimum. The state recalculates it each year and publishes it as a cents-per-gallon rate. A small environmental assurance fee is added.

Utah is the refining center of the Rocky Mountain region. The EIA lists five refineries in the Salt Lake City area, in Salt Lake City, North Salt Lake, and Woods Cross, with about 213,000 barrels a day of combined capacity. They also supply neighboring states by pipeline, including Idaho. Regular gasoline in Utah is 85 octane, as elsewhere in the region.

Utah was one of the cheapest states in the 1970s, ranking 4th in 1973, 3rd in 1974, and 4th in 1977, years in which its annual average ran from 1.4¢ to 3.6¢ below the U.S. figure. The one early exception was 1982, when it ranked 46th. From the late 1990s it settled slightly above the national average: 3.6¢ above on average in the 2000s, with rankings between 23rd and 39th.

Since 2011 the EIA has estimated Utah’s annual price by applying the Rocky Mountain regional trend to its 2010 level, so its year-to-year changes match those of Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. The largest one-year rise in Utah’s record was 1979 (+41.0%); the largest decline, 2009 (−27.2%). The record annual average is $4.14, in 2022; adjusted for inflation, the high was 2012 ($5.04 in 2025 dollars) and the low 1998.

The region’s weekly price runs about 13% below its annual average in January and 7.6% above from June through September.

Nevada, at $3.96, had the highest 2024 average among the states bordering Utah, and New Mexico, at $3.02, had the lowest. Utah's own 2024 average was $3.33. Utah averaged 62.6¢ below Nevada in 2024, and it averaged 47.0¢ below Arizona ($3.80). It averaged 31.3¢ above New Mexico in 2024, and it averaged 21.0¢ above Wyoming ($3.12). Utah averaged 1.6¢ below Idaho ($3.35) in 2024, and 3 of 6 bordering states averaged less than Utah that year.

Utah stood 8th-cheapest in 1970, 19th-cheapest in 1980 and 15th-cheapest in 1990. It stood 33rd-cheapest in 2000, 40th-cheapest in 2010 and 42nd-cheapest in 2020. The annual average was $0.34 in 1970 and $2.84 in 2010. In 2024 the rank was 34th-cheapest, tied with another state, which is 17th-most-expensive counted from the other end.

The 34.0¢ by which Utah averaged above the U.S. in 2021 is the largest such amount in the 1970–2024 record. Utah's average was above the U.S. figure in 39 of the 55 years and below it in 16.

In the EIA table dated July 2026, Utah's state taxes and fees on gasoline came to 38.6¢ a gallon, which is 4.8¢ above the 33.8¢ average across the 50 states and D.C.
