Maryland Gas Prices This Week

In the EIA’s July 2026 (revised August 2026) table of motor fuel taxes, Maryland’s state taxes and fees on gasoline total 46.8¢ a gallon, the 8th-highest of the 50 states and D.C. The 51-jurisdiction average is 33.8¢, and the federal tax adds 18.4¢ everywhere. Since the Transportation Infrastructure Investment Act of 2013, the Maryland tax has had three parts: a base excise of 23.5¢, a component adjusted each July 1 for the change in the Consumer Price Index, and a sales-and-use-tax equivalent calculated from the average retail price of gasoline. That structure is why the rate changes every July. For 30 days in 2022, from March 18 to April 16, the state suspended the tax entirely.

Maryland has no refineries. The Colonial Pipeline supplies terminals in the Baltimore area, and the Port of Baltimore receives marine shipments. Federal reformulated gasoline is required in the Baltimore region, the Washington suburbs (Montgomery, Prince George’s, Frederick, Charles, and Calvert counties), Cecil County, and Kent and Queen Anne’s counties; western Maryland and most of the Eastern Shore use conventional gasoline.

In the EIA’s annual state series, Maryland has tracked the national average closely except in the 1990s. Its average gap was 1.2¢ above the U.S. figure in the 1970s, 12.7¢ above in the 1990s, and from 2.2¢ to 5.1¢ above in each decade since 2000. In 1990 it ranked 50th-cheapest of 51; by 2000 it was 22nd, and in 2024 33rd. The highest annual average is $3.95, in 2022, 5.8¢ above the U.S. average. Adjusted for inflation the peak was 2012, at $5.06 in 2025 dollars. The largest one-year increase was in 1974 (44.0%), and the largest declines in 2009 (27.6%) and 2015 (27.6%).

With no weekly state series, Maryland’s seasonal pattern is best read from the EIA’s weekly Central Atlantic region (PADD 1B): averaged over 2004–2025, 7.2% below the year’s average in January, near the average in April, and 5.3% above in June.

Maryland's 2024 average was $3.32, which placed it 33rd-cheapest of the 50 states and D.C. In 1970 it was 23rd-cheapest at $0.36, in 1980 it was 28th-cheapest at $1.24, and in 1990 it was 50th-cheapest at $1.29. By 2000 it was 22nd-cheapest at $1.49, and in 2010 it was 27th-cheapest at $2.74. In 2020 it was 38th-cheapest at $2.26.

Its cheapest ranking in any year from 1970 to 2024 was 18th-cheapest, reached in 1971 and 1982. Its least favourable was 50th-cheapest (2nd-most-expensive), reached in 1987 and 1990.

Against the U.S. average, Maryland was below in 1971, 1979 and 1982 only. Its 1979 gap of 1.1¢ below is the largest amount below in any year from 1970 to 2024. In 1989 it averaged 16.6¢ above the U.S. figure, the largest amount above in that span. In 2024 the U.S. average was $3.29.

Among bordering jurisdictions in 2024, Maryland averaged 0.8¢ below West Virginia at $3.33. It averaged 7.3¢ below Pennsylvania at $3.40 and 15.5¢ below the District of Columbia at $3.48. Maryland averaged 1.6¢ above Delaware at $3.31 and 23.8¢ above Virginia at $3.09.

In constant 2025 dollars, the 2024 average was $3.41, and the lowest annual average was $2.30 in 1998. The 2014 to 2024 change in constant dollars was a fall of 25.9%, against a fall of 1.8% at the pump.
