Michigan Gas Prices This Week

In the EIA’s July 2026 (revised August 2026) table of motor fuel taxes, Michigan’s state taxes and fees on gasoline total 53.4¢ a gallon, the 6th-highest of the 50 states and D.C. The 51-jurisdiction average is 33.8¢, and the federal tax adds 18.4¢ everywhere. Michigan changed how it taxes fuel on January 1, 2026. The 6% sales tax at the pump ended, and the per-gallon motor fuel tax rose from 31¢ to 52.4¢, with an annual inflation adjustment. The only other state charge in the EIA figure is a 1¢ environmental protection regulatory fee.

Michigan has one refinery, Marathon’s Detroit plant, with a capacity of 146,000 barrels a day, according to the EIA. Eight southeast Michigan counties (Lenawee, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair, Washtenaw, and Wayne) limit gasoline to 7.0 psi vapor pressure from June 1 through September 15, a state rule adopted in 1996 because of ozone violations in the Detroit area. In April 2026 the governor declared an energy emergency that suspended the state limit, to match a federal waiver, until no later than July 1, 2026. The rest of the state sells conventional gasoline.

There is no weekly EIA series for Michigan. For the Midwest region, weekly prices over 2004–2025 averaged 9.8% below their annual mean in January and 7.5% above it in June.

Michigan’s annual ranking has changed several times. It was 4th-cheapest of the 51 in 1970, 47th in 1974, and among the five cheapest in 1991, 1992, 1993, 1995, and 1997. Since 2000 it has ranked between 12th and 20th. It ranged from 0.1¢ to 9.6¢ below the U.S. average from 2000 through 2014, and from 11.9¢ to 19.7¢ below from 2015 through 2024. The highest annual average is $3.71, in 2022. Adjusted for inflation, the highest was 1980, at $4.94 in 2025 dollars, and the lowest 1998, at $1.00 ($1.98 in 2025 dollars).

Michigan reached 3rd-cheapest in 1971 and again in 1992, its cheapest ranking in any year from 1970 to 2024. The 1980 average of $1.26 placed it 40th-cheapest, and that year's 3.1¢ above the U.S. average was the largest amount above in any year. The 1990 average, $1.10, placed it 6th-cheapest.

Across 1970 to 2024, 41 of 55 years had Michigan below the U.S. average and 13 of 55 had it above. The 2023 figure of 19.7¢ below the U.S. average was the largest amount below in any year. In 2020 the average of $2.00 made Michigan 15th-cheapest, while in 2010 the average of $2.66 made it 17th-cheapest.

In 2024 Michigan averaged $3.10, or $3.19 in constant 2025 dollars, and ranked 16th-cheapest, which is 36th-most-expensive. That average was 18.4¢ below the U.S. average of $3.29. Indiana, at $3.07, had the lowest 2024 average among the 3 bordering states, and Michigan was 3.2¢ above it. Wisconsin, at $3.28, had the highest, and Michigan was 17.7¢ below it. Ohio stood at $3.25, and Michigan was 14.6¢ below it.

In the EIA table dated July 2026, the average state total on gasoline taxes and fees across the 50 states and D.C. was 33.8¢ a gallon, and Michigan's total was 19.6¢ above that average.
