Indiana Gas Prices This Week

In the EIA’s July 2026 (revised August 2026) table of motor fuel taxes, Indiana’s state taxes and fees on gasoline total 64.5¢ a gallon, the 3rd-highest of the 50 states and D.C. The 51-jurisdiction average is 33.8¢, and the federal tax adds 18.4¢ everywhere. Indiana’s excise tax was 18¢ from 2003 until a 2017 law raised it by 10¢ and added annual inflation adjustments through 2024; the rate for July 2026 through June 2027 is 37¢. Instead of charging sales tax at the pump, Indiana collects a gasoline use tax, the equivalent of its 7% sales tax, at a per-gallon rate the state resets each month. The EIA counts that tax in the state figure, which is why Indiana ranks higher on total tax than on its excise rate alone.

In 2026 the governor suspended collection of the gasoline use tax in April under an energy emergency declaration, added the excise tax to the suspension in May, and extended it under a new declaration in August. The EIA table lists the statutory rates and does not reflect the suspension.

Indiana has two refineries, according to the EIA: BP’s Whiting refinery on Lake Michigan, which at 435,000 barrels a day is the largest in the Midwest, and Countrymark’s 36,700-barrel plant at Mount Vernon. Lake and Porter counties, next to Chicago, require federal reformulated gasoline, and Clark and Floyd counties, across the Ohio River from Louisville, have a 7.8 psi summer volatility limit. Indiana has no weekly EIA price series; the Midwest region’s weekly prices run from 9.8% below their annual average in January to 7.5% above in June.

Indiana’s annual average ranged from 4.0¢ to 13.3¢ below the U.S. average from 2000 through 2014 and from 14.1¢ to 23.2¢ below from 2015 through 2024. It was among the five cheapest states in 12 years between 1987 and 2008. Indiana ranked 43rd-cheapest of 51 in 1970. The highest annual average is $3.67, in 2022. Adjusted for inflation, the highest was 1981 (1980 was within a cent), at $4.90 in 2025 dollars.

Indiana's rank has moved between 3rd-cheapest in 1989, 1996 and 2005 and 43rd-cheapest in 1970. In 1980 the state averaged $1.25 and stood 38th-cheapest. By 1990 the average was $1.09 and the rank was 5th-cheapest. The 2000 average was $1.43, tied at 11th-cheapest, and in 2010 the average was $2.63 at 9th-cheapest.

The 2020 average was $1.97, again 11th-cheapest. In 2024 the average was $3.07, the rank was 11th-cheapest counted from the cheapest, and 41st-most-expensive counted from the other end. Against the U.S. average of $3.29 that year, Indiana was 21.6¢ below.

Among the four bordering states in 2024, Michigan averaged $3.10, Kentucky $3.17, Illinois $3.18 and Ohio $3.25. The count of bordering states that averaged less than Indiana was 0 of 4.

Over 1970 to 2024, Indiana was below the U.S. average in 42 of 55 years and above it in 12 of 55. The gap above reached 2.0¢ in 1980, and the gap below reached 23.2¢ in 2023.

In constant 2025 dollars, the 2024 average of $3.07 is $3.15, and the lowest inflation-adjusted average was $1.96 in 1998. The one-year rise of 42.4% came in 1974, and the one-year fall of 28.2% came in 2015. Between 2014 and 2024 the pump average fell 3.5%, against a fall of 27.2% in constant dollars. The EIA estimates Indiana's years after 2010 from the change in the state's region, so the year-to-year moves since 2011 follow that region.
