New Hampshire Gas Prices This Week

In the EIA’s July 2026 (revised August 2026) table of motor fuel taxes, New Hampshire’s state taxes and fees on gasoline total 23.7¢ a gallon, the 10th-lowest of the 50 states and D.C. The 51-jurisdiction average is 33.8¢, and the federal tax adds 18.4¢ everywhere. The state calls its gasoline tax the road toll. It was 18¢ from 1991 until July 1, 2014, when a 4.2¢ increase took effect to fund the Interstate 93 widening and other road projects, bringing it to 22.2¢. Two cleanup-fund fees add about 1.5¢. New Hampshire has no general sales tax, so none applies to fuel.

New Hampshire has no refineries. Its gasoline arrives by tanker and barge at terminals on the Piscataqua River near Portsmouth. Four southern counties, Hillsborough, Merrimack, Rockingham, and Strafford, require federal reformulated gasoline; the rest of the state uses conventional gasoline.

In the EIA’s annual state series, New Hampshire’s 2024 average of $3.25 was below every other New England state and 3.6¢ below the U.S. average, and it was also the lowest in the region in 2020, at $2.14. Its average gap to the U.S. figure has been small in every decade, between 5.8¢ above (1990s) and 2.4¢ below (2020–2024). It ranked 42nd-cheapest of 51 in 1980 and 29th in 2024. The highest annual average is $3.93, in 2022, 3.1¢ above the U.S. average; adjusted for inflation the peak was 2012, at $5.11 in 2025 dollars. The largest one-year increases came in 1980 (39.4%) and 1979 (38.6%), and the largest decline in 2015 (29.3%).

New Hampshire has no weekly EIA series. The weekly New England region (PADD 1A) shows the seasonal pattern: averaged over 2004–2025, 7.7% below the year’s average in January and 6.1% above in June.

For most of the EIA series New Hampshire’s average price, all grades together, has sat above the national figure. It came in below only in 1975–1978, 2005, 2007, 2015, 2019–2021, 2023, and 2024. Those exceptions have gathered at the recent end: 6 of the last ten years are on the list, against a handful in the three decades before. In 2024, the latest year of the series, the state was 3.6¢ below the U.S. average.

The widest premium was in 2013, when the state averaged 10.6¢ above the U.S. and ranked 36th of 51, counting from the cheapest. The largest discount came in 2021, at 6.5¢ below, with a rank of 26th. Its most expensive placing in the whole series came in 1971, at 47th.

Across the ten years from 2014 to 2024, the state’s annual average went from $3.41 to $3.25. The U.S. figure moved from $3.31 to $3.29 over the same span, a smaller decline, and New Hampshire’s rank improved from 33rd to 29th. With no sales tax on fuel and a road toll that has not changed since 2014, the shift came from the market, not from a tax cut at home.

Vermont, at $3.36, was the bordering state with the highest 2024 average, while Massachusetts, at $3.33, was the lowest of the three. New Hampshire's own 2024 average of $3.25 sat 11.4¢ below Vermont and 7.9¢ below Massachusetts.

The yearly gap to the U.S. average reached 10.6¢ above in 2013 and 6.5¢ below in 2021. Those are the widest gaps in each direction during 1970–2024. In 2024 New Hampshire's average was $3.25 against a U.S. average of $3.29.

On rank, New Hampshire was 12th-cheapest in 1975, its cheapest placing in the series. In 1971 it was 47th-cheapest, which is 5th-most-expensive. It was 32nd-cheapest in 1970 at $0.37, then 42nd-cheapest in 1980 at $1.26 and 40th-cheapest in 1990 at $1.21. By 2010 it was 30th-cheapest at $2.76, and in 2024 it was 29th-cheapest, which is 23rd-most-expensive.

The EIA's annual series puts the highest price in current dollars at $3.93 in 2022. In constant 2025 dollars the highest was $5.11 in 2012, and the lowest was $2.17 in 1998. The 2020 average was $2.14.

The state's taxes and fees on gasoline in the EIA table dated July 2026 total 23.7¢ a gallon. The average state total across the 50 states and D.C. in that July 2026 table is 33.8¢, so New Hampshire sits 10.0¢ below it.
