Louisiana Gas Prices This Week

In the EIA’s July 2026 (revised August 2026) table of motor fuel taxes, Louisiana’s state taxes and fees on gasoline total 20.9¢ a gallon, the 7th-lowest of the 50 states and D.C. The 51-jurisdiction average is 33.8¢, and the federal tax adds 18.4¢ everywhere. The 20¢ excise is made up of 16¢ for the state Transportation Trust Fund and 4¢ for the TIMED highway program created in 1989. The rate was last increased in 1990 and is not indexed to inflation.

Louisiana has the second-largest refining capacity of any state, after Texas: about 3.0 million barrels a day in the EIA’s January 2026 count, roughly 17 percent of the U.S. total. The largest plants are Marathon’s Garyville refinery, ExxonMobil’s Baton Rouge refinery, and Citgo’s Lake Charles refinery. The Plantation Pipeline begins at Baton Rouge, and the Colonial Pipeline crosses the state from Texas.

Despite that concentration of refining, Louisiana was not consistently among the cheapest states until the 2010s. In the EIA’s annual data it ranked 35th in 1990, 20th in 2005, and 26th in 2008, when it was level with the U.S. average to within half a cent. Since 2010 it has ranked in the ten cheapest every year, and fourth in 2024. Its average gap to the U.S. average was 5.0¢ below in the 2000s and 34.7¢ below in 2020–2024. Louisiana’s record annual average is $3.50 in 2022. Adjusted for inflation, the most expensive year was 1981, at $4.89 in 2025 dollars.

Several parishes around Baton Rouge were moved off the federal 7.8 psi summer volatility limit in 2017–2018. Louisiana is in the EIA’s Gulf Coast region (PADD 3), whose weekly prices ran 42¢ below the U.S. average in 2025, up from 10¢ below in 2004. Seasonally, the region’s prices average 9.0% below the year’s mean in January and 6.5% above in June.

Louisiana's 2024 average of $2.91 was 38.1¢ below the U.S. average of $3.29, which left it 48th-most-expensive among the 50 states and D.C. In 2023 it sat 39.1¢ below the U.S. average, its largest amount below in the series, and in 1991 it sat 7.3¢ above, its largest amount above. The tally of years below the U.S. average is 41 of 55, and the tally above is 13 of 55.

Bordering states in 2024 were Mississippi at $2.90, Texas at $2.88 and Arkansas at $2.92. Louisiana averaged 0.6¢ above Mississippi that year. Texas had the lowest 2024 average among the bordering states, and Louisiana was 2.3¢ above it. Arkansas had the highest 2024 average, and Louisiana was 1.9¢ below it.

Its cheapest placing, 2nd-cheapest, came in 1973 and 1974, after a start at 25th-cheapest in 1970 at $0.36. Later points were 11th-cheapest at $1.43 in 2000, 10th-cheapest at $2.63 in 2010 and 4th-cheapest at $1.88 in 2020.

In constant dollars the lowest average was $2.04 in 1998, and the 2024 figure was $2.98 in 2025 dollars. From 2014 to 2024 the constant-dollar average fell 30.1%, and the average at the pump fell 7.3%. The EIA estimates Louisiana's years after 2010 from the change in its region, so the largest one-year rise, 43.6% in 2021, and the largest one-year fall, 29.8% in 2015, are the region's moves.
