Frozen at the 2011 indexed rate
Maine taxes gasoline at a flat 30.0¢ a gallon. For several years the rate was indexed to inflation and rose each July 1: from 28.4¢ in 2008 to 29.5¢ in 2009 and to 30¢ on July 1, 2011. The Legislature then repealed indexing effective January 1, 2012, leaving the July 2011 rate in place. It has not changed since.
The rest of Maine’s state figure is a fee for the Ground Water Oil Clean-up Fund, charged at 61 cents per barrel of gasoline, which works out to about 1.5¢ a gallon. The EIA’s note also lists a coastal oil clean-up fee that ended in 2015 and a small Petroleum Marketing Fund fee on motor fuel oil. The EIA lists no sales tax on gasoline for Maine and does not flag it for local option fuel taxes.
