What Did Gas Cost the Year You Were Born?

That’s +5.1% more than the $3.91 gas costs today (a national average of $4.05 at the pump), adjusted for inflation (2025 dollars).
In 2006, gas cost $2.57/gal — that’s $4.10 in today’s money.

The ochre line is the honest one: in 2025 dollars, gas bit hardest during the early-1980s oil shock and again around 2011–12, and was cheapest near the turn of the millennium.
